CLUBS & MEMBERS - ON THE JOB
With
16 years of experience in the executive recruiting business, Smooch
S. Reynolds knows a thing or two about helping clients find the
right job. In today's market, she also knows how important it is
to find the right headhunter to get ahead in your career. "You
have to begin building a relationship with a recruiter long before
you need them," advises Reynolds, a founding member of City
Club on Bunker Hill in Los Angeles and author of the book, Be
Hunted! 12 Secrets to Getting on the Headhunter's Radar Screen.
Reynolds is founder, president, and CEO of the Repovich-Reynolds
Group based in Pasadena, California, which focuses on searches in
corporate communications, investor relations, and marketing. Among
her tips for getting a headhunter's attention: focus on exceeding
expectations at your workplace and develop unique valuable qualities
- such as risk tolerance or making good judgment calls - that will
give you the edge in career advancement. "Hiring executives
are as interested in a professional's intangible qualities as they
are in their [employment] track record," Reynolds says. How
you carry yourself also can make a big difference. "You can
tell if someone is passionate about his or her career from a mile
away," she says. Reynolds knows of what she speaks, given her
own passion for executive recruiting. "I love what I do,"
she says. "It is a real high."
